The story of Shelim Hussain’s rise from rags to riches is a very archetypal one. Born in Bangladesh he was 11 years old when his family paid £3000 for him to be bought to the UK in the hope of him being able to secure a better life for his family. A young Shelim endured many hardships during his childhood, he'd routinely be forced to sell his dinner tickets at school to be able to buy himself second hand clothes and do multiple paper rounds to earn a little extra money. As he got older his enterprising work ethic showed no sign of letting up as he worked evenings and weekends as a waiter to put himself through college.
It was during his time working as a waiter in an Indian restaurant that he would stumble upon an opportunity to that would change his life. A local fish supplier had gone out of business creating a vacuum in the Cardiff restaurant trade. An enterprising Shelim drove to London, bought six boxes of Prawns for the princely sum of £20, drove back to Cardiff and sold them for a profit and so Euro Foods was born. That was 1992, fast forward to 2022 & Euro Foods is a business turning over £105mn a year but it hasn’t all been plain sailing.
Eurofoods has a relationship as a supplier to over 3000 takeaways, restaurants and caterers across the UK. It’s precisely this these relationships that Shelim hoped to put to profitable use when he invested in Kukd. A takeaway delivery app. Kukd was fundamentally an IT business with many moving parts. Moving parts which all need to work together to get the food from the restaurants kitchen to the customers front door. Kukd was losing £350,000 a month and with losses mounting up Shelim decided to restructure the business by moving some of the company’s jobs abroad to his native Bangladesh. This one move triggered an investigation by the Welsh Government because of a grant Kukd had been given to provide jobs in Wales. No wrongdoing was found but the damage was done. Insurers withdrew his credit insurance which in turn led to suppliers refusing to supply him. His one supplier that carried on supplying him ended up getting banned from doing business from the UK but not before having to pay them £21,000,000 he owed them. Then came a tax investigation and the coronavirus pandemic which saw him lose 80% of his turnover within two weeks as the world ground to a halt.
Shelim has sacrificed his youth and more recently his health for the business he created. He could have closed up shop and walked away, still a multi millionaire with no need ever to work again but it’s more than a business to him. It’s his journey. A teenager racing around the back streets of Cardiff with boxes of prawns in his boot to sell before they'd defrost! To a young tycoon said to have the midas touch, To a middle aged man battling a Government, A HMRC tax investigation and a global pandemic simultaneously to save his business. He is now a father, husband & friend to many who looks to pass on the lessons that many ups and downs of life & business have taught him. Shelim said in an interview recently he aims to make Euro Foods Group a £500mn turnover company within the next 10 years. Something tells me we shouldn’t bet against him...
